Polymer Materials Engineering – Possibilities of Compounding Technology

  • Polymer Materials Engineering – Possibilities of Compounding Technology

“The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. (JSW)” is a Japanese industrial company operating across several business sectors. Its Plastics Machinery Business manufactures a wide range of polymer-processing equipment, including “Twin-screw extruders”. Beyond machinery manufacturing, JSW has developed extensive process-engineering expertise through decades of collaboration with customers and the continuous advancement of compounding technologies as well as other extrusion processes.

This presentation explores how processes in a twin-screw extruder can be controlled and optimized through screw-configuration design. It introduces not only basic but also JSW’s fundamental design philosophy and demonstrates how original JSW screw elements can be selected and combined to achieve specific functions, including feeding, melting, mixing, dispersion, and distribution. Representative compounding applications will illustrate how these concepts are translated into practical industrial solutions. By connecting screw design with material behavior and product requirements, the presentation will highlight how compounding technology can open new possibilities in polymer materials engineering.
